History
The production team behind the success of COMPASS MEDIA are Ivan Hughes and Angela Heck. They have been working together since 2002 when they created the award winning documentary, In the Shadow of the Chief.
The team has traveled the globe in search for adventure, they have driven through the sands of the Sahara, sailed down the Nile River, explored the ruins of Mayan civilizations, climbed volcanoes and paraglided off mountain tops.

Adventures in Storytelling
Ivan Hughes is a Canadian documentary filmmaker, writer, and programmer whose work is driven by a belief in adventures in storytelling—projects that explore risk, place, history, and human connection through lived experience rather than spectacle alone.
He has directed and produced award-winning and internationally screened documentaries including In the Shadow of the Chief, Soul of the Sea, Spindrift, and Sananguatiq. His films have screened at mountain, adventure, and documentary festivals in Canada and abroad, recognized for their visual restraint, narrative depth, and ethical, place-based approach.
Ivan’s filmmaking practice extends across remote and culturally distinct regions, with production experience in Nepal, Belize, and Nunavut. Working in these environments has shaped a collaborative, long-term approach to documentary—one rooted in trust, respect, and curiosity, and attentive to the responsibilities that come with telling stories in shared spaces.
Alongside his creative work, Ivan is the Director of Programming & Partnerships at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF), where he curates international film programs, develops original talks and workshops, and supports emerging filmmakers through mentorship and grant initiatives. He has mentored filmmakers through the National Screen Institute and the Winnipeg Film Group, with a particular focus on Indigenous and first-time storytellers.
He is also the founder of Compass Digital Media and a frequent collaborator with athletes, historians, and cultural organizations. Whether behind the camera or shaping conversations on stage, Ivan’s work reflects a commitment to storytelling as an adventure in itself—one that invites reflection, connection, and shared understanding.

Angela Heck
Co-FOUNDER
Angela Heck is a media producer and consultant with 20+ years of experience in film, television and the digital media industry. She has past experience in communications, social media and industry development consultation with the National Film Board of Canada, Whistler Film Festival, CBC, Tactica Interactive and the National Screen Institute. Her current focus is on transmedia production and social media marketing.
